Stephen Smith, NSSWE’s Primary Wind Ensemble conductor
Ben is an up and coming conductor passionate about new music and music education. Ben was been with NSSWE from its inception, as a player, Orchestral Manager, and Assistant Conductor of the Senior Wind Ensemble. He conducts bands at Pennant Hills High School, Turramurra High School, Warrawee Public School and Gordon East Public School. Ben has also conducted at Junior State Music Camp for the Arts Unit.
Ben has a degree in music and engineering from the University of Sydney and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he has studied oboe, conducting and mechatronic engineering. He has developed his conducting skills through programs developed by the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors Association, Melbourne Youth Orchestra, Ensemble Offspring and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.
As an oboist, Ben has played with the Regional Youth Orchestra, and worked with musicians from the Australian World Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Staatskapelle Berlin. He plays with several community orchestras such as the North Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Eastern Sydney Chamber Orchestra, and regularly plays in musical pits for Noteable Theatre Company. Ben also plays clarinet, bass clarinet and cor anglais.
